Vacancy

"Vacancy" blinked the neon signs
from the empty corners of her heart
spaces so long deserted, cobwebs clung to
the hollow recesses where love and laughter
should abide
Against her will, these voids prevailed
Not for want of occupancy
Not for longing to once again
open up, dust out, polish, air
these forgotten tracts
Invitations freely extended
Promising loyalty, friendship
                                                 support, involvement
Yet temporary and shallow had been all dwellers
                                                   Perhaps, she pondered,
                                                 mere tidying was not enough
                                                 perhaps – a major renovation
                                              was needed

Quote of the day:     Wondrous is the strength of cheerfulness,
and its power of endurance - the cheerful man will do more
in the same time, will do it better, will preserve it longer,
                               than the sad or sullen.
                                                                                      ~Thomas Carlyle

  1. I like that Thomas Carlyle quote! Enjoyed your poem, too - full of feeling. I am drawn to the line, "Against her will, these voids prevailed" - sad!

  2. Wonderful metaphor to express the feelings of loneliness

  3. I so agree with Elle. Your words took me right to the space of what loneliness must be like. Poignant.

  4. Your words described what we all have felt at least one time....loneliness. I liked your ending...a major renovation...but please keep the core of you. Jackie http://familytrove.blogspot.com/

  5. Interesting metaphor between the "vacancy" sign often seen on buildings and the heart. This line grabbed my attention: temporary and shallow had been all dwellers.
