The Sounds of Silence

2:09 p.m. - Monday afternoon - Spring Break Week                  

I lay prone on the sofa, nestled in a heavy blanket.
Eyes closed - wishing for elusive sleep

Husband is in the bedroom taking his nap before heading to work for the evening.
Son is in his room - focused on building a model car, after having been banned
     from his Xbox for awhile.  Not a peep.... he is intent on his work.
I catch the occasional snip of scissors, gentle clicks and clacks of other tools

Daughter is in her room - watching a movie.
She passed through moments ago to check on the banana bread I had asked her to make.
Murmurs of satisfaction came from the kitchen, followed by momentary clamor
    of oven door closing, wire rack pulled out, cabinets closed.
She shuffled back through the living room.

Quiet settled in again.
The low hum of the refrigerator adds a gentle pulse to the silence.
A drip from a faucet.
A car passing by.
Long moments of uninterrupted quiescence
Out of the ordinary, fleeting no doubt, but welcome apparently by all
A lull in time, in busy-ness, in effort
I settle into the moment
