The Sounds of Silence

2:09 p.m. - Monday afternoon - Spring Break Week

I lay prone on the sofa, nestled in a heavy blanket.
Eyes closed - wishing for elusive sleep

Husband is in the bedroom taking his nap before heading to work for the evening.
Son is in his room - focused on building a model car, after having been banned
from his Xbox for awhile.  Not a peep.... he is intent on his work.
I catch the occasional snip of scissors, gentle clicks and clacks of other tools

Daughter is in her room - watching a movie.
She passed through moments ago to check on the banana bread I had asked her to make.
Murmurs of satisfaction came from the kitchen, followed by momentary clamor
of oven door closing, wire rack pulled out, cabinets closed.
She shuffled back through the living room.

Quiet settled in again.
The low hum of the refrigerator adds a gentle pulse to the silence.
A drip from a faucet.
A car passing by.
Long moments of uninterrupted quiescence
Out of the ordinary, fleeting no doubt, but welcome apparently by all
A lull in time, in busy-ness, in effort
I settle into the moment

Quote of the day:   True silence is the rest of the mind; it is to the spirit what sleep is to the body,
                                  nourishment and refreshment.     ~William Penn

  1. Your words have just relaxed me so much, that I need a nap! Beautiful!

  2. My intention this month is to brave the silence. Love your quote and will be more mindful of the quiet in my home due to your poem.

  3. "A lull in time, in busy-ness, in effort" what wonderful words to describe being quiet.

  4. Sounds like the perfect first day of spring break day - luxuriating in relaxation.

  5. I loved the silence in your slice today. Have you read Terje's slice: Silence Fair? You need to go there -

  6. was the banana bread? I felt like I was almost there...on the couch...listening to silence with the occasional that oven door. Hmmm can't get my mind off that banana bread. :-) Jackie

  7. What a pleasant moment we all can feel thanks to your words. Your slice answers a wondering in my slice. Thoughts crossing their path in the blogsphere. Enjoy your spring break.
